Crate Training a Puppy: A Gentle 7-Day Plan
A crate isn't a cage β done right, it becomes the place your puppy chooses to nap. The goal is simple: build good feelings, never force it.
Days 1β2: Make it inviting
Leave the crate open with a comfy bed and toss treats inside. Feed meals just inside the door. No closing the door yet β you're only building positive associations.
Days 3β4: Close the door briefly
While your puppy is busy with a stuffed chew, close the door for a few seconds, then open it before they fuss. Slowly build to a minute or two.
Days 5β7: Add real time
Extend to 10β20 minutes while you're in the room, then step out briefly. Pair the crate with a cue like 'crate time' and a small reward.
Crate + house-training
Puppies avoid soiling where they sleep, so the crate supports potty training. Take them out right before and right after crate time, and never use the crate as punishment.
If your puppy cries
Make sure needs are met (potty, exercise, water), then avoid rewarding noise by opening the door mid-cry. Wait for a quiet moment to let them out so calm gets the reward.
